unequal treatment question?

in Uncategorized

i am doing a course at university, 18 months. it comprises of 2 days college and 3 days work experience per week. i had baby 12 months into the course and obviously went out on maternity leave. a few weeks prior to birth i was told that i would have to return to college as soon as i had baby or if i couldnt they did not know when the college could accomodate me to complete my last semester of the course and it may be the following year. obviously with the current economic climate i could not afford to be out of work waiting to complete my qualification. (we were paid while on course). so i returned to work 2 weeks after birth when semester was starting. on my 1st day back explained to course leader that i would be missing 2 of the 5 days of college that week (1st week of college in semester always 5 days of college), she exploded and told me she would have me out of the course and would have to report me to dean of college and i had committed to return to college, and id have to bring baby into college if i had no babysitter, etc, etc. so i completed the full week after getting extra babysitters for 2 week old baby. i thought ill just get on with it, its one week. my colleague in same course had her baby 5 weeks after me and was asked to return to college 3 weeks later, she agreed initially but when her time was up she refused to come back as she was breastfeeding. no threats were made to her and she was told ok and to get lecture notes from us. i was furious but said nothing at time. i developed mastitis 5 times and postnatal depression and was treated for a cyst on my pituatary gland and i never said a word and handed in all my assignments. i discovered the same colleague was given extensions for all her assignments and was advised to take her time. she passed all exams.i subsequently failed 1 and received D in another assignment which i have currently redone & submitted. to me this is unfair treatment and i am wondering how i could take this further in colege & ? legally.

They have no legal obligations to make accommodations for you. Those laws cover employment, not education and internships.

You did poorly on assignments and failed an exam. How can that be the fault of the college? The way you tell the story, there appears to be different requirements placed on the tow of you, but again, you did a poor job on one assignment (which they do not need to allow you to redo, I might add), and you failed an exam. How does that have any bearing on the way the college treated you? How is your PND or gland cyst their problem??
